Jnan Chandra Ghosh Polytechnic was named after the famous Scientist Sir Jnan Chandra Ghosh, founder Director of I.I.T. Kharagpur.
Description of polytechnic
Sir Jnan Chandra Ghosh was an eminent scientist and successful administrator. He completed his M.Sc. in 1915 from Calcutta University. As a student he was influenced by great teachers like Sir P.C. Roy and Sir J.C. Bose. In 1919 he went to University College, London for his doctoral work. He worked on Photo Chemistry and its application Strong Electrolytes. His work received much appreciation from renowned scientists all over the world. On his return from London he started teaching in Calcutta University and then joined Dacca University. As an administrator he occupied many important positions. In 1939 he became the Director of IISC, Bangalore from 1950 to 1954 he was the founder director of IIT, Kharagpur and 1955 became the V.C. of Calcutta University. In 1947 he was made the Director General of Industries and Supplies. He joined the Planning Commission in 1955 at the request of the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and served the commission till his death in 1959.
